Akshaya Tritiya falls on April 29 this year. It's considered one of the most auspicious muhurats for gold, property, and new beginnings. Here's what the Vedic tradition actually recommends.
Akshaya Tritiya (also spelled Akha Teej) falls on the Tritiya (third lunar day) of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the month of Vaishakha. In 2026, this falls on April 29. 'Akshaya' means imperishable or that which never diminishes — making this one of the few days in the Hindu calendar that is considered intrinsically auspicious without requiring additional muhurat calculation.
On Akshaya Tritiya, both the Sun and Moon are in exalted positions simultaneously — an astronomical coincidence that occurs very rarely. The Sun is exalted in Aries (Mesha) and the Moon is exalted in Taurus (Vrishabha). Both luminaries being strong creates an exceptionally potent energy field for new beginnings.
Classical texts consider Akshaya Tritiya one of three and a half Swayamsiddha Muhurats — self-auspicious moments that do not require an astrologer to calculate a muhurat for. (The others are Vijaya Dashami and the full day of Gudi Padwa.)
The modern practice of buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya is legitimate — but it has been heavily commercialised. The actual Vedic recommendations for this day are broader and more meaningful:
The true spirit of Akshaya Tritiya is not just buying — it is giving. Charity performed on this day is said to multiply and return to you in unexpected ways. The 'akshaya' (imperishable) quality applies most powerfully to daan.
